Chelsea join Liverpool in £60m race to sign star 25-year-old – report
Chelsea have joined Liverpool in the race to sign defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer, say reports

Chelsea are preparing a £60m bid to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer – but Liverpool are still keen to land the defender, according to reports in the British media.
The Daily Mail is claiming that Chelsea are ready to make a big-money offer to try and land the Netherlands international as Antonio Conte looks to bolster his defensive options at Stamford Bridge.
The same story claims that Chelsea’s offer is likely to prompt negotiations with Southampton, but that the player himself is still “keen” on a move to Anfield.
Liverpool were forced to release a statement apologising for their conduct after Southampton lodged a complaint against the Reds earlier this month following their failed pursuit of the 25-year-old defender.
The 18-time English champions said that they were ending their interest in the player in the statement but it would seem that the defender is still open to a move to Merseyside.
The same story claims that Chelsea are “wary” that Van Dijk still harbours a desire to move to Liverpool this summer as they step up their interest in the defender.
Chelsea have been linked with a host of players this summer but have so far not officially confirmed any new signings.
