Antonio Conte has leapt to the defence of Victor Moses after he was sent off for diving in Chelsea’s FA Cup final defeat by Arsenal on Saturday.

The Nigerian was shown a second yellow card in the second half at Wembley after tumbling in the box under pressure from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

However, replays showed that there was no contact and that referee Anthony Taylor was correct to give Moses his marching orders.

Chelsea ended up losing 2-1 to the Gunners as goals from Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey wrapped up victory for Arsenal despite Diego Costa’s equaliser.

But the Blues manager was quick to defend Moses after the game despite his sending off at Wembley.

Conte told Sky Sports: “There is a lot of tension in these moments and sometimes you could be tired.

“I don’t think if my player dived he did it with a real intention of doing it. We have arrived at the end of the season and many players are tired, and then there is a lot of pressure.

“It’s not a good situation to dive, for sure, but Moses is an honest player and if he did this it’s only because he was tired. He didn’t want to cheat the referee.”

The defeat on Saturday meant that Chelsea missed out on the chance to make it a domestic double in Conte’s first campaign in charge at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues were crowned Premier League champions earlier this month.
