Ian Wright has warned Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho that they will have to step their game up if they want to win the Premier League title this season.

The Red Devils were held to a goalless draw by Liverpool in the Premier League last weekend as they produced a defensive display at Anfield.

Mourinho clearly set up his team to contain Liverpool and try and catch the Reds on the break but Manchester United ended up having to settle for a point in their clash on Merseyside.

The result left Manchester United in second place in the Premier League table and two points behind leaders Manchester City.

However, Arsenal legend Wright was not impressed with Mourinho’s post-match comments and used Chelsea’s shock loss to Crystal Palace last weekend as a warning for the Red Devils.

Speaking on The Debate on Sky Sports, Wright said: “Why is Jose Mourinho coming out and saying ‘I was expecting them to take off a couple of people so I would be able to do this’?

“Why is he making excuses for? Why is he making excuses?

“If he thinks that is a good point then he should say that’s a good point. I think that is what he should have said.

“If you’re going to start picking points that you’re going to get, and I think they had a good opportunity to go to Liverpool and beat them, we saw what happened to Chelsea if you’re not on it.

“Palace, hadn’t won in seven, hadn’t scored a goal, they beat them.

“You can’t take anyone for granted in this league.

“You have to beat the teams with the form you’re going into the game with.”

Manchester United return to Premier League action on Saturday with a trip to Huddersfield.

Mourinho is aiming to become the first manager to win the Premier League with Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final triumph in the 2012-13 campaign.

They finished sixth in the table last season but won both the Europa League and League Cup.
