Matt Le Tissier: 24-year-old is just not good enough for Chelsea
Matt Le Tissier explains why he thinks that Michy Batshuayi's days at Chelsea are numbered
Matt Le Tissier believes that Michy Batshuayi is not quite at the level needed to succeed at Chelsea.
The Belgian striker joined the Blues back in the summer of 2016 as one of Antonio Conte’s first signings since the Italian’s appointment at Stamford Bridge that summer.
However, the 24-year-old has struggled to hold down a regular spot in the first team under Conte and that has led to questions about his long-term future at the west London club.
Indeed, Batshuayi has only started two Premier League games for Chelsea so far this season and is clearly struggling to convince Conte that he deserves a regular spot in the team.
And former Southampton striker Le Tissier believes that Batshuayi’s days at Chelsea are numbered.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Le Tissier said: “Is he that good for Chelsea? I’d say probably not. His abilities probably lie in a team a little below Chelsea’s level.”
He added: “To have started only three games even when the main striker has not been available, Conte has been almost playing without a centre-forward rather than Batshuayi in that position, which I think tells you a lot about what the manager thinks about him.
“A couple of years – you think that would be long enough to adapt and break into the first team when the main striker isn’t available.”
Batshuayi will be hoping to play a part for Chelsea when the Blues return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon with a home clash against Leicester City.
Antonio Conte’s men are currently in third place in the Premier League table as they look to try and get as close to leaders Manchester City as possible.
Chelsea won the title in style last season but already find themselves 16 points behind Manchester City this term.
