Ex-Chelsea coach sends warning to Antonio Conte about Michy Batshuayi

Ray Wilkins has not been impressed by what he's seen from Michy Batshuayi at Chelsea in recent weeks

Ray Wilkins has described Michy Batshuayi as a “bit of a liability” following his performance during Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace at the weekend.

The Belgian striker started the game in the place of the injured Alvaro Morata as the Blues slumped to their second successive defeat of the Premier League season.

Morata’s absence was heavily felt by the Blues, with the Spanish forward having scored six times in his first seven Premier League outings.

Batshuayi was unable to have much of an impact on the game on Saturday as Chelsea suffered a surprise defeat by the Premier League’s basement club.

Morata was brought in as a long-term replacement for Diego Costa, who left Chelsea to re-sign for Atletico Madrid last month.

But former Chelsea coach Wilkins believes that neither Morata nor Batshuayi are capable of filling the void left by Costa at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on Monday morning, Wilkins said: “Morata has done very well up front indeed but for me he’s no Diego Costa.

“Now we’ve lost him [to injury] we’re having to rely on Batshuayi, who on Saturday was a bit of a liability.

“His movement is almost null and void, it has to be first-class up front for Chelsea.”

Morata is expected to be back in action for Chelsea when the Blues return to Champions League action on Wednesday night with a crunch clash against Roma at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues will then aim to get back to winning ways in the Premier League when they host Watford at the weekend.
