Danny Drinkwater has admitted that he cannot wait to line up alongside N’Golo Kante for Chelsea after completing his late transfer to the west London club.

The midfielder became Chelsea’s sixth and final summer transfer late on Thursday night after he completed his move to Stamford Bridge from Leicester City.

Drinkwater was heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the closing days of the summer transfer window and his switch finally materialised at the final hour.

Kante has earned a reputation as one of the Premier League’s top midfielders since his arrival in England from Leicester City.

The French midfielder completed his move to Chelsea last summer and helped Antonio Conte’s men to win the Premier League in his first season at the club.

Drinkwater knows Kante well after the pair played together in midfield for Leicester in the 2015-16 campaign and won the Premier League title with the Foxes.

And the 27-year-old, who signed for Chelsea in the early hours of Friday morning, admitted that he can’t wait to line up with his former team-mate once again.

Drinkwater told Chelsea’s website: “I played with N’Golo for a season and there was not really a game I didn’t enjoy playing next to him.

“I am looking forward hopefully to carrying on where we left off.

“I think we hit it off from the first game and after that we did not really lose.

“He is a top lad, the most down-to-earth person you will meet. I can’t see him changing much and I am looking forward to meeting him again.”

Chelsea return to Premier League action after the international break when they take on Drinkwater’s former club Leicester on Saturday 9 September.
