Chelsea are close to sealing the signing of defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton, say reports
Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Virgil van Dijk as their first recruit of the summer transfer window, according to reports in Italy.
Gianlucadimarzio.com is claiming that the Blues are set to land the 25-year-old defender in a deal from Southampton after Liverpool missed out on the player earlier this month.
Van Dijk is claimed to be Chelsea manager Antonio Conte’s “first choice” when it comes to strengthening his defensive options this summer.
The same report states that Chelsea are expected to have to pay a fee in the region of £60m to land the Netherlands defender this summer.
Conte is thought to be on the lookout for defensive reinforcements after John Terry called time on his career with the Blues at the end of last season.
The Blues are also keen to strengthen and add depth across the board as Conte prepares his team for a return to the Champions League next term.
Chelsea won the Premier League in Conte’s first season at the club but came up short in the FA Cup final, when they were beaten by Arsenal at Wembley last month.
