Brendan Rodgers claimed Chelsea parked “two buses” at Anfield after a 2-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield.

The Reds enjoyed 73 per cent possession on Sunday, but Rodgers’s side were unable to navigate a way past a defensive-minded Chelsea outfit on Merseyside.

Steven Gerrard’s slip in the 45th minute allowed Demba Ba to seize control of the loose ball and slot a finish past Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

Liverpool had 26 attempts on Mark Schwarzer’s goal, but Joe Allen and Luis Suarez failed to beat the Blues’s second-choice shot stopper before Willian wrapped up the points in injury time.

“Congratulations to Chelsea, they won the game, we just couldn’t find the breakthrough,” Rodgers told Sky Sports News after Chelsea moved to within two points of the leaders.

“They obviously sat very deep. I think there were two buses parked today, never mind one.

“It was like a back six with three midfield players in front of that. That’s 10, with the goalkeeper, for 90 minutes consistently behind the ball.”

Rodgers refused to blame captain Gerrard after the 33-year-old’s mistake proved to be the turning point of the clash between the Premier League’s top two.

“Steven is a boy who has picked up this club so many times,” Rodgers said.

“And it was just really unfortunate because he slipped at a crucial moment and it was right on half-time.

“He was doing everything he possibly could today and we hoped there would be one or two who would step up to the plate instead of him, but we couldn’t quite do that today.

“There’s certainly no blame because we are in the position we are in now because of him; he’s been instrumental for us this season.”
