Chelsea’s Rafael Benítez: We’ll help Frank Lampard break goal record
Chelsea's Rafael Benítez says he would be delighted to see Frank Lampard become the club's all-time leading goal scorer on Thursday
Rafael Benítez says Chelsea will do all they can to help Frank Lampard break Bobby Tambling’s goal record against Basel on Thursday night.
The England international moved to within two strikes of becoming Chelsea’s all-time leading scorer after netting his 201st strike in a 2-0 victory over Swansea City on Sunday.
Lampard, who came on as a 79th-minute substitute in the 2-1 first-leg victory in Basel, could feature for the Blues in another European semi-final night at Stamford Bridge.
It would be a fitting occasion for the 34-year-old to draw level with or even eclipse Tambling’s 202 goals on what would be his 116th European appearance, and Benítez hopes the midfielder can continue his prolific form.
“I think everybody here, apart from Basel, will be delighted if Frank scores two or three goals and breaks the record,” said Benítez.
“It’s important for us to have him scoring goals – and for him. We will try to help in any way we can and hopefully he can do it.”
Lampard has scored 15 goals in 45 appearances for Chelsea this season but the veteran midfielder is yet to score in European competitions.
