New Chelsea signing explains why he chose to join the Blues
Ross Barkley discusses his decision to sign for Chelsea from Everton this month
Ross Barkley has insisted that he has opted to join Chelsea in order to get out of his “comfort zone” after he was confirmed as the Blues’ first January signing on Friday.
The England midfielder signed for the west London side from Everton on Friday and has penned a five-and-a-half year contract with Chelsea in a deal believed to be worth around £15m.
The 24-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea in the summer months but a deal failed to materialise last year, before the transfer was officially confirmed on Friday.
Barkley will be hoping to stake his claim for a regular spot in the Chelsea first team in the coming weeks as he looks to impress Antonio Conte.
And the England star has lifted the lid on why he opted to sign for Chelsea ahead of other clubs.
Speaking in an interview with Chelsea TV, Barkley said: “I came to Chelsea, I’m ambitious and I’m wanting to further my career by winning things and playing with the best players.
“Obviously it was a big decision of mine to leave my boyhood club but I felt this was the right decision to come to a massive club like Chelsea and improve myself and challenge for trophies.
“I felt like this is the right thing for me to improve as a player and challenge myself and come out of my comfort zone, come down to London and play for a massive club like Chelsea and try and achieve great things.”
Chelsea are currently preparing for their League Cup semi-final clash against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
The west London side head into the game having played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with the Gunners in the Premier League at The Emirates last week.
