Antonio Conte told to make this key Chelsea signing in January
Matthew Upson says Chelsea should splash the cash on signing a new striker in the January transfer window
Matthew Upson has urged Antonio Conte to sign a back-up striker for Chelsea in the January transfer window.
The Blues are bound to be linked with a host of players in the coming weeks as the mid-season window draws ever nearer.
Chelsea signed Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window and the Spanish striker has been in fine form for the west London side, scoring 10 goals in the Premier League so far this term.
However, it seems that Conte doesn’t fully trust Michy Batshuayi to play as the back-up striker for the Blues this season, with the Belgian having only started two Premier League games so far this season.
And former defender Upson feels convinced that the Blues should make a move to try and bring in another forward in the mid-season transfer window.
Speaking to Sky Sports News on Friday, Upson said: “I think it’s very personal and tactical in a way.
“There isn’t a like for like, a lot of clubs will have a striker.
“You look at City (Sergio) Aguero or (Gabriel) Jesus, even Tottenham you have (Fernando) Llorente backing up, (Heung-Min) Son can play down the middle.
“With Batshuayi as you say he seems to be very out of favour at the moment because whenever Morata’s not playing, he seems to want to move with the three and play (Eden) Hazard maybe down the middle and really change it, really change the team positioning.
“There is probably a demand for a backup for Morata but when you look at the previous seasons and the success that Chelsea have had with that type of role, Drogba nearly played every game for Chelsea and did a great job, you then had Costa who played that role week in week out and was very reliable and made a lot of appearances.
“I just think those are the demands that are on Morata, he’s a top player coming to a top club and they are just the demands of the Premier League and I don’t see why he possibly can’t meet those demands.
“He seems to maybe be struggling with the demands of the Premier League and that (a new striker) could be something that could strengthen Chelsea.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea are currently preparing for their home clash against Stoke City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
The Blues head into that game fresh from claiming the three points against Brighton with a 2-0 win in west London on Boxing Day.
That win left Conte’s side in third place in the table and just a point behind second-placed Manchester United.
