Pat Nevin has poured cold water on the suggestion Chelsea could re-sign Daniel Sturridge.

The England international has fallen down the pecking order at Liverpool FC due to persistent injury problems over the past three or four seasons.

Sturridge hasn’t been able to stay injury-free since Jurgen Klopp took over the reins of the Anfield outfit from Brendan Rodgers back in October 2015.

The 28-year-old’s best season came in 2013-14 when Sturridge netted 21 times in 28 games in the Premier League to help Liverpool FC finish in second place.

Sturridge moved to Liverpool FC from Chelsea in Janaury 2013 during Rafael Benitez’s spell in charge of the west London club.

Current Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is short in the attacking department amid Alvaro Morata’s current crisis of confidence.

The Spanish striker’s understudy Michy Batshuayi has struggled to seize his chance when called upon by Conte in the current campaign.

Chelsea are in the market to sign a proven goal-scorer in January to ease the workload on summer signing Morata.

However, when asked about the possibility of Chelsea bringing Sturridge back to Stamford Bridge, Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live:

“They need someone who they can be comfortable he will be fit. That has always been the question [with Sturridge] for a long, long time. He was played consistently in the right wing at Chelsea.

“When he played through the middle, he looked really good.”
