Chelsea made to regret selling these two players, claims Ray Wilkins
The former Chelsea midfielder believes the defending champions do regret selling Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne
Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne have made Chelsea regret their decision to sell the two attackers, Ray Wilkins has claimed.
The Belgian midfielder struggled to make the breakthrough into the Chelsea side under Jose Mourinho before he was sold to Wolfsburg in 2014.
De Bruyne made eight appearances in all competitions during his Stamford Bridge career but the attacking midfielder made a name for himself in the Bundesliga.
He scored 10 goals and made 20 assists during one season at Wolfsburg to secure a £52m move to Manchester City in 2015.
De Bruyne has blossomed into Manchester City’s most-important player since Pep Guardiola took over the reins from Manuel Pellegrino in 2016.
The Manchester City midfielder has scored four goals and has made eight assists in the Premier League this term to help the Citizens build an eight-point lead at the top of the table.
Salah, on the other hand, spent six months at Chelsea in 2014 before he moved to Fiorentina and then AS Roma on loan.
Liverpool brought the African forward back to English football in the summer and the 25-year-old is the Premier Leatgue’s top goal-scorer with 12 goals in 15 games.
Former Chelsea assistant manager Wilkins claimed that the defending champions have been left to rue their poor transfer decisions.
“Not at all. Those players were in the lower echelons of the first team squad when they were at Stamford Bridge. The biggest credit to them is that they left, they worked hard and made Chelsea regret it,” Wilkins told sportingbet.
“If you’re not playing, leave and play somewhere else. Nathan Ake did the same and moved to Bournemouth – he’s a wonderfully gifted player and playing regularly there has done him the world of good. I applaud them as it takes a kind of player to leave a comfortable wage and living at Chelsea in search of proving yourself.”
