Insider reveals Chelsea will have to pay £20m to sign 23-year-old Brazilian defender
Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie confirms Chelsea want to sign Roma defender Emerson Palmieri
Chelsea will have to pay around £20m to sign Roma defender Emerson Palmieri in January, according to reporter Keith Downie.
The defending Premier League champions are in the market to sign a defender to improve their options at the back heading into the final months of the 2017-18 Premier League campaign.
Chelsea have entered the race to sign the full-back and the Brazilian-born starlet is eager to complete a switch to the west London side in order to work with Italian coach Antonio Conte.
The 23-year-old has only made one substitute appearance and has racked up 16 minutes of Serie A football in the current campaign to find himself firmly out of favour at the Italian club.
Sky Sports News reporter Downie confirmed that Chelsea are in the market to sign Emerson but will face competition for the full-back’s signature.
“Our colleagues in Italy have told us that Chelsea have made an approach to Roma for the defender Emerson Palmieri,” Downie told Sky Sports News on Wednesday morning.
“We’ve been told that Antonio Conte sees the recruitment of a full-back as a priority in this window. A fee of around £20m should be enough to secure the deal, cash which Roma want to invest elsewhere in the squad.
“Sky Italia say Emerson is pleased to play for Conte and favours a move to Chelsea above all other clubs. There have been a number of other teams interested and there has been no comment from Chelsea so far on Emerson.”
Emerson is an Italian citizen following his three-season stay at AS Roma after the full-back completed a move to AS Roma from Brazilian club Santos in 2015.
Chelsea signed England international Ross Barkley in a £15m deal from Merseyside club Everton earlier in the January transfer window.
The west London outfit have won the Premier League title in two of the past three seasons.
