Chelsea urged to make ‘perfect’ signing to replace Diego Costa
Ray Wilkins believes Everton striker Romelu Lukaku would be a natural replacement for Chelsea star Diego Costa
Romelu Lukaku would be a great signing to replace Diego Costa in the Chelsea team, according to Ray Wilkins.
The Belgium international has been heavily linked with a return to Stamford Bridge over the past couple of weeks.
Costa appeared to pave the way for Lukaku to return to Stamford Bridge after the Chelsea striker revealed last week that Conte had made him surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have been unable to offload Costa this summer so far, although the Spain international was heavily linked with a switch to Serie A giants AC Milan.
Lukaku scored 25 times in 36 games last season to finish behind Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane in the race to win the Premier League’s golden boot.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ about reports linking Chelsea with a move to re-sign Lukaku, former Manchester United midfielder Wilkins said:
“If you look at Chelsea over the last X amount of years, you’ve had the Drog.
“They will never find another Drogba, he was the best. Then they had Diego Costa and now Lukaku just is a perfect fit.
“If Costa was to go I think he would be the perfect fit to come into Chelsea.”
Chelsea sold Lukaku to Everton in a £27m deal in 2014 after Jose Mourinho failed to guarantee the striker regular first-team football.
