Antonio Conte warned about Chelsea signing’s ‘big flaw’
Kevin Kilbane identifies Ross Barkley's big flaw following the midfielder's move to Chelsea
Kevin Kilbane has pinpointed Ross Barkley’s decision-making as the Chelsea signing’s one big flaw.
The defending Premier League champions signed the England international in a bargain £15m deal from Premier League rivals Everton last week.
Barkley arrives at Chelsea with a point to prove after allowing his Premier League career to stagnate at Goodison Park over the past couple of seasons.
The 23-year-old earned comparisons to Paul Gascoigne and Wayne Rooney when he broke into the Everton team as a raw but talented teenager under Roberto Martinez.
The attacking midfielder has failed to develop his game at the Toffees, falling out of favour under Ronald Koeman before a serious hamstring problem.
Conte will be tasked with polishing Barkley’s game to transform the England international into a more rounded Premier League player.
Former Everton defender Kilbane has identified the one big weakness in Barkley’s game following his cut-price move to the defending Premier League champions.
“Decision making is Barkley’s one big flaw,” Kilbane told Irish radio station Newstalk on Monday night.
“When he has been considered by the big clubs, you get to a certain age and your decision making improves.
“The biggest downfall at Everton was he didn’t know the game. He didn’t have any defensive nous.”
The former Everton midfielder netted 21 times in 150 games in the Premier League.
Barkley was named Everton young player of the year in 2013 and 2014.
Barkley scored 27 times in 179 games in all competitions during his eight-season spell in the Everton first team.
