Jose Mourinho says he doesn’t expect many new faces to arrive at Chelsea during the summer transfer window.

The Blues manager confirmed that the west London side will look to sign a striker during the off-season, with Atletico Madrid talisman Diego Costa widely-tipped to make a £60m move to Stamford Bridge.

But 51-year-old Mourinho played down the chances of Chelsea of being overly active in the transfer market this summer after signing Nemanja Matic and Mohamed Salah during the January window.

It is normal we want to improve. We are not in a desperate situation

Asked how many signings Chelsea would make, Mourinho replied: “Not many.

“As I was saying, the striker is something that we are speaking about for a long, long time. In December/January, when all of the media were asking and trying to understand why we were not bringing a striker in the January market, I was clear in the way I was answering.

“It was something myself and the club were working on. We were preparing the long-term future and not an immediate solution to help us for the rest of the season.”

He added: “It is normal we want to improve. We are not in a desperate situation. Everyone wants to improve in summer transfer window and one area we want to improve, is the striker’s position.

“We have three strikers, one is coming, one is probably leaving. That is normal.”

Mourinho doesn’t believe it will be easy to get Chelsea’s prospective transfer dealings in the summer market wrapped up before the World Cup.

“More and more if transfer windows are open to the 31 August, people delay, people react, people wait to see what is happening with their own players,” Mourinho added.

“It is very difficult to do that before the World Cup. It is more the time to find a direction and analyse details and decide really the projects for next season and the project for transfer windows.”
