Chelsea transfers: ‘Jose Mourinho should rethink Diego Costa deal’

Chelsea transfers: Ronnie Whelan feels Spain striker and Blues target Diego Costa won't frighten top, top centre-halves in Europe

Jose Mourinho should give his pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa a serious rethink, according to Ronnie Whelan.

The Blues are reported to be close to concluding a £32m deal for the Spain international, who scored 27 goals and made three assists for Atletico this season.

Yes, he is big and strong, but I don’t think he’ll really frighten top, top centre-halves

Costa was hauled off in the second half of Spain’s staggering 5-1 loss to Holland in their Group B opener on Friday night as the 27-year-old looked distinctly off the pace.

And former Liverpool midfielder Whelan doesn’t feel Costa is the solution to Chelsea’s striker woes – and urged Mourinho to reconsider is reported plans to sign the Atletico star.

“Very in and out. At times he looks half decent and gets on the end of things, but if I was Jose Mourinho now and the deal has gone through, I would be thinking about it seriously,” Whelan told RTE. “I don’t think he did enough for £30m.”

Whelan added: “I don’t think he’ll really frighten [Premier League defences]. Yes, he is big and strong, but I don’t think he’ll really frighten top, top centre-halves.

“They won’t be really worried about him. He has scored goals, but if I was a centre-back myself, I wouldn’t be particularly worried.”

Arsenal legend Liam Brady backed up Whelan’s stance, questioning Costa’s ability to use his pace to expose opposition defences at the World Cup.

“He scored a lot of goals in the Champions League this year and they were very good,” Brady added.

“He had a great season for Atletico Madrid. But I find him awkward and he doesn’t seem to fit into the Spanish team.

“He is powerful but he doesn’t have real pace.”
