Chelsea transfers: Raphael Varane ‘not thinking’ about Blues interest
Chelsea transfers: Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane is focused on the World Cup amid interest from Blues
Raphael Varane is refusing to get distracted by reported interest from Chelsea ahead of the Real Madrid centre-half’s first World Cup.
The 21-year-old defender has been touted as a potential long-term replacement for Chelsea skipper John Terry, who signed a one-year contract extension at the Blues last month.
At this time, I am not thinking about any of that [Chelsea interest]
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho signed Varane in an £8m deal from Lens in 2011 during the Portuguese coach’s reign as head coach at los Blancos.
However, the France international moved to distance himself from speculation linking the young centre-half with a big-money switch to west London this summer.
“An interest in Chelsea?” Varane told Telefoot. “At this time, I am not thinking about any of that. There is a World Cup to prepare for, this is not the time to discuss these types of questions.”
Mourinho, who guided Chelsea to a third-place finish in his first season back at Stamford Bridge, has previously spoken of his admiration for Varane.
“I think he is the best young central defender in the world. Already I think he’s the best,” Mourinho told Yahoo.
“A young player must be somebody who plays in the World Cup for the first time.”
