Jose Mourinho says Chelsea will prioritise the Champions League over the Premier League.

The Blues manager sparked controversy by admitting he wants to rest some of his keys players for their clash against leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday ahead of Atletico Madrid’s trip to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Priority is the Champions League. If we win two matches, we win the Champions League

The 2012 Champions League winners secured a valiant goalless draw against Diego Simeone’s side, who are the current La Liga leaders, at Vicente Calderon in midweek.

Mourinho lost Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech and captain John Terry to injury in the Spanish capital, stretching his squad to the maximum as the Blues feel the effects of competing on two fronts.

And the Chelsea manager made no attempt to hide where his priorities lie.

“The priority is the Champions League. If we win two matches, we win the Champions League,” Mourinho said.

Despite prioritising what he feels is Chelsea’s best chance of silverware, Mourinho is adamant that his first season back at Stamford Bridge won’t be defined by whether the Blues win a trophy or not.

“No [we don’t have to win a trophy to be a success]. We have to work to the maximum of our possibilities,” Mourinho added.

“We have to make our families proud as having us as good professional honest people.”
