Newcastle offered their backing for manager Chris Hughton on Wednesday night amid speculation over his future.

The club insist Hughton has their continued support and underlined their desire for the former Tottenham assistant to extend his reign at St James’ Park. The 51-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season with negotiations over a new deal ongoing.

Newcastle suffered a 4-0 defeat against Arsenal in Wednesday’s Carling Cup fourth round tie after reports claimed bookmakers had suspended betting on the former Ireland international’s future at the club.

A Newcastle statement read: “Chris is our manager and will remain our manager, and it is our intention to re-negotiate his contract at the end of the year.”

Hughton guided Newcastle back into the Premier League this year and his side currently sit in ninth place in the top flight, with 11 points from a possible 27.

And the former West Ham full-back recently admitted his frustration over “unjust speculation” regarding his future.

“My remit this season is to keep the club in the Premier League and so far it’s going okay. Nothing has changed from yesterday,” said Hughton.

“One thing it doesn’t do is deter me from the job that I’m doing. Is it a help? Of course not. Is it something I welcome? Of course not.

Hughton added: “But it doesn’t distract me from the big job I have – I have a remit to do the best I can for this club.”
