Chris Smalling insists Manchester United’s point at Shakhtar Donetsk proves the Reds Devils “can really stick together”.

United secured a battling draw in Ukraine on Wednesday night as David Moyes’ men bounced back from successive Premier League losses to Manchester City and West Bromwich Albion.

The Premier League champions became just the second English side to leave the Donbass Arena unbeaten after Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham all suffered defeats at the Ukraine side in the past decade.

And United defender Smalling praised his team-mate for producing a dogged performance.

“It shows we can really stick together,” Smalling is quoted as saying by Daily Mail. “We know a few results have not gone our way.

“But when there are a few doubts, we need to show we have a bit of character and fight. Once the disappointment of that equaliser subsides and we get back home, we will see it is a well-earned point that will allow us to move on.”

He added: “You can only build confidence through performances.

“This was half a performance. It wasn’t great by any means but a well-earned point at such a hard place gives us some positives to work from.”

Smalling urged the Red Devils to return to winning ways at Sunderland on Saturday and avoid going into the international break with confidence low.

“After Saturday’s defeat, this week was crucial,” he added. “It was two tough away games and we have started pretty positively.

“Now we need to make sure we get three points on Saturday, then things will look a lot better going into the international break. If we don’t get that win we have two weeks to ponder on what may have been.”
