Commonwealth Games 2014: Will Sharman targets Glasgow gold

Will Sharman sets his sights on Commonwealth Games gold following a successful dry-run at the Sainsbury's Glasgow Grand Prix

Will Sharman has his sights set on Commonwealth Games gold following a successful dry-run at the Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix in Hampden Park on Friday.

The 29-year-old stormed to victory in the 110m hurdles in a personal best time of 13.21 seconds, holding off challenges from world bronze medallist Sergey Shubenkov and Jamaica’s Hansley Parchment, who has run the fastest time in the world this year.

And while acknowledging he can do nothing to control the performances of his competitors, Sharman has faith in his own ability to improve on the Commonwealth Games silver secured four years ago in Delhi when he returns to Glasgow to represent England later this month.

“All I can do is just hope to perform to the best of my ability when I return here for the Games and see if it is going to be good enough on the day,” said Sharman, who hopes to compete throughout the Summer Series – events proudly backed by long-term supporter Sainsbury’s.

“The track is brilliant. It was nice to get out there and get a feel for it, because I found it difficult in the warm-up area.

“I haven’t run on a track like this all year, so it does feel slightly different when you are trying to get your range with the hurdles.

“But this was a good dry run and I am on the right track and hopefully I can come back and climb the podium again.”

Several of Sharman’s rivals face a final training block ahead of their return to Scotland in a last-ditch effort to iron out any issues and tweak their respective race plans.

However, the reigning British champion feels his preparation is best served on the track. Sharman will squeeze in a run at Horse Guard’s Parade next weekend at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games before jetting back north.

“I’m running at Horse Guard’s Parade, then I’ll be back here,” added Sharman. “I don’t know what is going to happen at the Commonwealth Games, there are some absolutely great competitors there. People with faster times than me, but I will give it my all.”

Sainsbury’s is proud to support British Athletics through the Summer Series events and is committed to helping young people lead healthier, more active lifestyles. For more information visit www.sainsburys.co.uk/legacy
