Roy Hodgson expressed his delight at England’s performance despite watching his side end their dismal World Cup campaign with a goalless draw against Costa Rica.

Daniel Sturridge went closest for England with a shot that flew inches past the post, while substitute Wayne Rooney also tested Keylor Navas with a clever chip.

We’re really unlucky not to win this game

The result means England finish bottom of Group D, while Costa Rica go through at the top of the table.

“It’s still hollow,” said Hodgson. “We showed today what a good team we can be.

“I’m so disappointed not to finish with a victory but I don’t think I could have asked for a much better performance.

“Apart from the first 10 or 15 minutes we dominated it totally. Unfortunately we didn’t take our chances but it should have been a comfortable victory.

“We’re really unlucky not to win this game. We restricted the team to almost no chances. In midfield we dominated and outplayed them.”

Uruguay were the other team to progress to the last 16 from England’s group after their 1-0 victory over Italy.
