Could Gerrard incident affect Liverpool’s form?
Gerrard has been instrumental in Liverpools title challenge this seasonThere's no doubt that the arrest of Steven Gerrard couldn't have come at a worse time for Liverpool.

There’s no doubt that the arrest of Steven Gerrard couldn’t have come at a worse time for Liverpool.

Their fans will now be genuinely worried that this could affect the club as a whole. With key matches against Everton and Chelsea to come in a couple of weeks, Rafa Benitez would have been wanting his players concentrating on all matters football.

But the well-publicised arrest of Liverpool’s captain will surely prove a distraction for everyone at the club. Gerrard presumably would have been been rested against Preston in the FA Cup regardless of matters off the pitch, but with key games away to Stoke and at home to derby rivals Everton, will Gerrard’s performances be affected? It remains to be seen.

A player that is so often relied upon by Liverpool. The other players look to Gerrard for inspiration. But if Gerrard’s performances suffer due to recent events, will it also affect the performances of his team-mates?

It’s times like these that Liverpool need players like Carragher, Alonso and Mascherano to grab the team by the scruff of neck and guide the rest of the Liverpool squad through a potentially turbulent couple of weeks.

If Liverpool can get through this tricky period unscathed, they will surely be prepared for anything.

The alleged assault is out of character. Steven Gerrard, known for his tough demeanour on the pitch, is well-known for being a nice guy off it. A family man. That’s why I think it has come as a surprise to many football fans. We expect these kind of headlines for players like Joey Barton and Lee Bowyer. Not Steven Gerrard.

If there is the slightest doubt in the mind of Rafa Benitez that his captain may not be mentally ready for a game, he should leave him out. Robbie Keane can play the role behind the striker, as can Lucas. With the imminent return of Fernando Torres, Liverpool fans will at least receive one piece of good news this new year.

It’s just a shame that an excellent team performance at St. James’ Park, with Liverpool running out 5-1 winners and Chelsea dropping points against Fulham, have been tainted by the incident.
