Insider gives update of talk of Man United return for Cristiano Ronaldo
Sid Lowe casts doubt on reports linking Cristiano Ronaldo with a sensational return to Manchester United this summer
Cristiano Ronaldo’s relationship with Jose Mourinho is a reason to doubt reports of a return to Manchester United for the Real Madrid star, according to Sid Lowe.
The Portugal captain’s situation at The Bernabeu has been a constant source of speculation in recent days after he reportedly informed Real Madrid of his desire to leave the club this summer.
The reports came after Ronaldo was accused of avoiding tax by Spanish authorities and inevitably, Manchester United have been touted as a possible destination for the 32-year-old superstar.
It is no secret that Mourinho is keen to bolster his attacking options at Old Trafford this summer, with the Red Devils having been linked with Alvaro Morata over the last few weeks.
However, Spanish football expert Lowe feels that a move back to Old Trafford for Ronaldo could be made difficult because he did not have the best relationship with Mourinho during his time at Real Madrid.
Lowe told ESPN FC: “That’s the other question mark in all of this.
“You’re talking about Manchester United, a club that you rightly say that he’s always been extremely fond of.
“But, and I think we saw this in the Champions League Final, the fondness of the relationship was anchored on Sir Alex Ferguson, and he’s no longer the manager.
“The manager is Jose Mourinho and his relationship at the end with him at Real Madrid was difficult, it wasn’t good.
“If you put those two together, they’ve got a common goal, they’re both trying to win things, they’ve both extremely competitive men and extremely professional men in very, very many ways, then perhaps it would work.
“But I think that is another reason to doubt this.”
Manchester United secured a return to the Champions League next season despite finishing sixth in the Premier League, thanks to their Europa League triumph.
