James Milner says he is determined to make it difficult for Jurgen Klopp to leave his vice-captain out of the Liverpool FC team.

The former England international is facing increased competition for a starting spot in the current Premier League campaign following a busy summer of transfer activity.

Milner is facing increased competition for a starting spot under the German head coach despite Emre Can’s move to Juventus from Liverpool FC in the summer.

Liverpool FC signed Brazil international Fabinho in a £39m deal from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco after the versatile midfielder was previously linked with a move to Manchester United.

The Reds finally added Guinea international Naby Keita in a £48m deal from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig and the 23-year-old made quite the impression on his debut.

Milner played a vital role in Liverpool FC’s run to the Champions League final last term with important performances in victories over FC Porto, Manchester City and AS Roma.

The 31-year-old started Liverpool FC’s 4-0 win over West Ham United at Anfield last weekend to help the Reds make a promising start to the new campaign.

Milner is determined to retain his spot in Klopp’s team despite the number of arrivals at Anfield this summer.

“I think I missed one game last year through injury and that was the last [league] game of the season. The body is definitely holding up,” Milner told Premier League Productions.

“I feel very good and very fit – I want to play every single game. Obviously that’s not going to happen, I’m sure, and you need to rotate to be successful with the amount of games we have. And with the quality that’s in the squad, I’m sure that’s going to happen.

“But as long as I’m performing every time I step onto the field and making it as difficult as possible for the manager to leave me out of the side, I can’t do any more than that.

“The biggest thing for me is that I want to be successful at Liverpool: to win trophies and for me to be a part of that and contribute to that.”
