Mark Lawrenson is backing Manchester United to take another big step towards securing second place in the Premier League table by beating Crystal Palace 2-0 on Monday night.

The Red Devils were in impressive form last weekend when they came from a goal down to secure a 2-1 victory over Chelsea FC at Old Trafford and boost their hopes of finishing in second place.

Manchester City are now practically out of sight at the top of the table, with Pep Guadiola’s men having moved 16 points clear with their 3-0 win over Arsenal on Thursday night.

However, former Liverpool FC star Lawrenson is fully expecting to see the Red Devils claim all three points against the Eagles in Monday night’s Premier League clash.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Lawrenson said: “Manchester United’s second-half performance against Chelsea was a big one for them. Now they have to try to build on it.

“Selhurst Park is usually a tough place to go but it helps United that Crystal Palace are struggling a bit at the moment, with five games without a win.

“The Eagles are only above the drop zone on goal difference and they have got a tough month ahead of them – they also have to play Chelsea and Liverpool in March.

“For all the good work that Roy Hodgson has done, they are still in relegation trouble.”

Manchester United will have one eye on their crunch showdown against Liverpool FC at Old Trafford on Saturday 10 March in the Premier League.

The Red Devils finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season so any position in the top four will be a significant improvement for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Manchester United will take on Sevilla in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 clash at Old Trafford later this month.
