Dan Biggar welcomes Welsh fly-half battle

As the battle for Wales’ number ten shirt intensifies, record-breaking fly-half Dan Biggar is excited by the competition.

Biggar wore the shirt for Wales’ triumphant Six Nations campaign earlier this year and his form at club level has been impressive so far this season.

Last weekend, the 23-year-old collected 18 points in Ospreys’ 43-26 win against Connacht to become the first Welshman to pass 1,000 Pro 12 points.

But competition comes in the form of Rhys Priestland, who led Wales to the 2011 World Cup semi-finals and 2012 Six Nations Grand Slam, and Cardiff Blues’ youngster Rhys Patchell.

Biggar knows securing the fly-half spot for the autumn internationals is vital ahead of next year’s RBS 6 Nations but he does not expected it to be handed to him.

“You want to be challenged and I think that’s important in any position in Wales,” Biggar told Wales Online.

“Of course I’d love to be playing for Wales each week in the autumn but I’ve got to make sure my form is good.

“They’re obviously extremely talented players. I think Priestland is starting to find a little more confidence.

“He’s started the season reasonably well for the Scarlets. They have had some mixed results but I thought he’s played pretty well in each game.

“Patchell is younger, is still learning a little bit but he’s got all the skills in the world as well.

“Look, they’re both excellent players. I know them both well and they have both got extremely good skill-sets.

“It’s great for Wales, me, Priestland, Patchell. It’s good competition and exciting times.”
