Daniel Sturridge admits Liverpool will miss Jamie Carragher next season after the veteran helped the Reds secure a point in his final Merseyside derby.

The 35-year-old was tasked with marking Everton’s Victor Anichebe at Anfield and the former England international limited the striker to long-range efforts.

Meanwhile, Sturridge was unable to add to his tally of seven Premier League goals in a Liverpool shirt as the local clash finished all square, with Everton five points clear of the Reds with two games left.

And with Carragher set to retire at the end of the campaign after a decorated 16-year career at the Merseyside outfit, Sturridge conceded the centre-half’s absence will be felt at Anfield.

“He’s a very experienced player who’s been at this club for many, many years,” Sturridge told Liverpool’s website.

“He’ll be missed behind the scenes as well as on the football field. He’s a great man as well as a great player.

“We wish him all the best when he moves onto his new job.”

Meanwhile, Sturridge wasn’t too surprised that neither side had many clear cut chances to make the breakthrough in what was predicted to be a close-fought derby.

“It was a really tight game – they defended well, we defended well,” he added.

“There weren’t many great chances. I had a couple, I think Stevie had a couple of shots as well. It was a really close game and it was probably a fair result in the end.

“It was a really high tempo, and a tense game – as expected.”
