Former Liverpool FC midfielder Danny Murphy believes that his old club might just come up short in the Premier League title race, despite a promising start.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have started the season perfectly, winning all four of their games so far in the 2018-19 Premier League season.

Liverpool FC have only conceded one goal over the first month of the new campaign, impressing in defence with Joe Gomez, Virgil Van Dijk and new goalkeeper Alisson, in particular, standing out with their solid displays at the back.

After the conclusion of the international break, Tottenham are next up for Liverpool FC at Wembley, which will surely be the team’s toughest test to date this year.

According to BBC pundit Murphy, Klopp’s team are not quite ready to wrestle the title away from champions Man City, who he backs to retain their crown come May.

As the Daily Mail reports, he told the media on Sunday: “I’m Liverpool through and through. And this is a good time for us.

“The club have given themselves a really good opportunity by strengthening the squad and creating competition for places.

“I’m not sure they’ll beat City; if I’m honest, I think the gap is too big to bridge in one summer – but they’ll be challengers at the very least.”

Supporters will hope that Murphy turns out to be wrong as the new campaign progresses, particularly given the fact that Liverpool do already look a more cohesive and well-rounded team than they did last year.

Man City have set the standard but it will be fascinating to watch Liverpool attempt to usurp their rivals in the coming months, as English football continues to provide high drama like no other competition in Europe.
