Danny Welbeck: Why leaving Man United for Arsenal was ‘weird’
Danny Welbeck discusses his controversial transfer to Arsenal from Manchester United back in 2014
Danny Welbeck has admitted that his controversial transfer from Manchester United to Arsenal felt “weird” at first.
Welbeck swapped Old Trafford for Emirates Stadium back in the summer of 2014 after he was deemed surplus to requirements by incoming United boss Louis van Gaal.
The England international has not featured for the north London club since last season after picking up a knee problem back in April and undergoing surgery to correct the injury in September.
United’s decision to allow Welbeck to join one of their Premier League rivals raised some eyebrows, especially considering that the forward came through the club’s youth system.
Asked about his transfer to Arsenal, Welbeck told the club’s website: “It makes it easier for you because, like any situation in life, if you go somewhere and see a familiar face then you can obviously bond with them.
“Knowing the England boys from international duty and growing up with them in the youth teams made it easy. They integrate you into the group a lot easier with the other lads as well.
“It was a new challenge but it was an exciting time for me to approach a new situation, move from Manchester to London and all of the stuff that goes with it.
“It was a whole new city, not completely new as I’d been to London before, but it was weird knowing that I was going to be calling London home and not Manchester.
“The thing that you miss the most is your family and that’s the most important thing. A lot of my family and friends do come to London to see me anyway. They come to all the home games so I get to see them quite a lot anyway.
“But I was leaving something that I knew after growing up in Manchester, coming to a new city, it’s an exciting period.”
Welbeck, who is expected to be back available for selection in January, scored eight goals in his first 34 games for Arsenal after joining the north London club from rivals Manchester United last summer.
His last appearance for the club came in the 2-1 win over Reading back on 18 April.
