Phil Taylor won his record 14th PDC World Championship on Sunday night, destroying Raymond Van Barneveld 7-1. He also set a new world record with his point average for the night: a remarkable 109.75, surpassing the world record he set three months previously.

Taylor stormed into a 2-0 lead, taking the first two sets easily. However Van Barneveld won the third set to take the score to 2-1. A packed Alexandra Palace were hoping for a repeat of the 2007 World Championship Final were ‘Barney’ came from behind to beat Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor.

In the fourth set, Taylor momentarily wobbled and it looked like that a repeat of the classic final was on the cards. However, in the spirit of a true champion, he steadied himself and went on to take the set to extend his lead to 3-1.

Van Barneveld changed his darts, in an attempt to resurrect the match. But the tactic had little impact on his performance. Subsequently his resistance was short lived. There was only ever going to be one winner on the night.

And that was the 48 year old, Taylor. Clearly a player on top form he went on to demolish the poor Van Barneveld 7-1. Taylor has already established himself as the best player to have ever graced the game. And it’s safe to say that his achievements will never be surpassed.

No player in any sport in the world has dominated their individual sport over such a lengthy period of time. When you look at the likes of Federer, Phelps, and Tiger Woods. All legends of their sports. But Taylor’s achievements are quite simply unbelievable.

Whatever the critics say about Darts not being a real sport or a game for obese men in the local pub, you have to respect Taylor and what he has done in Darts. Watching him hit successive 180’s or the 176’s makes for memorising viewing. The guy is quite simply a legend.

This time next year, who’d bet against him making it a fifteenth championship? He’s got the power.
