David De Gea feels he has put the shaky start to his Manchester United career behind him and claims he is now more confident than ever.
The Spanish goalkeeper came under scrutiny for a handful of high-profile errors after moving to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
However, the 22-year-old shot-stopper, who has made 29 appearances for Manchester United this season, feels his sustained run in Sir Alex Ferguson’s first-team has brought out the best in him.
“I’m more confident and feel I’m playing consistently because I’ve had a prolonged run in the team,” De Gea told Inside United. “But training well and having a good mental attitude brings its rewards.
“Everything you put in, you get out. That is what you’re seeing now – I’m very happy with how I’m playing.”
United host Manchester City on Monday knowing that a victory over their derby rivals will open up an 18-point lead at the top of the table.
And after watching the Red Devils crash out of the Champions League and FA Cup, De Gea is desperate to collect a Premier League winners’ medal.
“I’d love to win the league this season but so does everyone else in the team,” he added.
“We’re all focused on getting three points from every game – that is what will take us to our objective. We appreciate where we are in the league and we want to finish it.”
