David Moyes believes Wayne Rooney is on course to surpass Sir Bobby Charlton’s tally and become Manchester United’s all-time top goal-scorer.

The 27-year-old forward currently has 202 United goals to his name, 47 behind Charlton’s record set during his 758 appearances for the Red Devils.

Rooney has netted five goals in nine appearances in all competitions so far this season, and Moyes believes that the former Everton forward has what it takes to break the record and earn legendary status at Old Trafford.

“I do think that if Wayne stays injury-free, then he will get there,” Moyes said.

“If he keeps up this level of performance, he will make another big dent in the records this season. And, once he does that, the finishing line would look that bit closer.

“It’s a big season for Wayne for club and country and he’s started well for both. I hope he does it because it would be an incredible achievement.

“When you think of the regard in which Sir Bobby is held at this club, then, if you broke his records, it would be something which would live with you forever.

“I think it would mean Wayne would achieve legendary status, so let’s hope he achieves it.”
