David Villa on the verge of move to Barcelona

David Villa appears to be on the verge of switching allegiances from Valencia to treble winners Barcelona, joining up with fellow Spanish team-mates Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Carlos Puyol.
Villa has been subject to much paper talk this summer with a number of Europe’s top clubs all being heavily linked with the clinical Spanish striker.
It appeared a matter of weeks ago, that Villa would become part of the Real revolution but the signing of Lyon striker, Karim Benzeama brought to an end any suggestion that Spain’s number 7 would be playing at the Bernabeau next season.
According to media reports, the striker wanted to remain in Spain, with a move to England proving unattractive. This brought to an end speculation the player would sign for Manchester United or Chelsea, who were both interested in signing the player.
Subsequently there were two viable options left for Villa: a move to Barcelona or remain at Valencia. Two possible factors have finally sparked the finalisation of the move.
Firstly, Valencia are currently suffering from the economic climate and are in serious debt. Marchena already moved to Real Madrid earlier this summer, with David Silva heavily linked with a move to Anfield.
The Villa transfer, which is thought to be in the region of €40 million will help to ease the finacial woes at the Castella. Also, it could mean that Silva will be remaining at the club.
Meanwhile Samuel Eto’o could well be on his way out of the Nou Camp. Manchester City made an a ‘stratospheric’ offer for the player which has deemed almost too good to turn down.
It remains to be seen if the Cameroon ace will make the switch to the Premier League but the arrival of Villa could spell the end for Eto’o, with Villa proving a more then adequate replacement.
Villa has a fantastic record in Spanish football, last season scoring 28 goals in a mere 31 outings.
A source close to Camp Nou has told Goal.com that Villa has had his wish granted and the player will be joining the European champions this summer.
