Ba, Le Tissier, Suárez & more: Twitter reacts as Spurs win, Liverpool lose
Demba Ba, Matt Le Tissier & Luis Suárez all tweet their thoughts after Liverpool lose, Chelsea & Tottenham win, and Newcastle draw

Gareth Bale stole the limelight on an entertaining night of Europa League football after the Wales star scored twice to help Tottenham secure a 2-1 first-leg victory over Lyon.
Elsewhere, Liverpool were comprehensively beaten 2-0 by Zenit St Petersburg in Russia, Chelsea were 1-0 winners in Prague, while Newcastle could only manage a goalless draw at home to Metalist Kharkiv.
Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, both past and present, in chronological order.
Former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer (@MCATEER4) is concerned that Luis Suárez is missing so many chances: “Need to take one of these chances. They’re few and far between in these games. Away goals are massive!”
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney (@WayneRooney) isn’t impressed by the Zenit pitch: “Just watching the Liverpool game. The pitch looks terrible!”
West Brom midfielder Steven Reid (@stevenreid12) agrees: “Zenit’s pitch is shocking!”
Chelsea striker Demba Ba (@dembabafoot) is cheering on his team-mates: “Sitting on the front of tv. Come on Chelsea… #victory”
However, Bursaspor defender Anton Ferdinand (@anton_ferdinand) likes a joke at Chelsea’s expense – although the joke’s on him as Channel 5 is in fact showing Home and Away: “Think I might watch Chelsea tonight on Channel 5!!”
Liverpool striker Suárez (@luis16suarez) promises the Reds will give everything to overturn the two-goal deficit: “We’ll give it all in Anfield! Together we can!”
Reds defender Jose Enrique (@jose3enrique3) is still optimistic too: “On the plane ready to travel back to Liverpool. Very disappointed result we deserved more. Still the second game in Anfield…”
Former Celtic striker John Hartson (@JohnHartson10) reckons Liverpool can still do it: “By the way this tie is not over. Liverpool can more than claw back two goals at Anfield.. Early goal and right back in it..”
Reading striker Noel Hunt (@boyhunt) keeps it short and sweet: “Garth Bale = #Gifted”
Former Bradford City manager Chris Kamara (@chris_kammy) is so excited he needs a tea: “Gareth Bale scores another absolute screamer to make it 1-0 to Spurs, time for a cuppa!”
Ex-Leicester midfielder Robbie Savage (@RobbieSavage8) leads the plaudits for Umtiti’s goal: “Wow wow what a goal for Lyon !!!! Zooooommmm!”
Southampton’s Matt Le Tissier (@mattletiss7) should know a thing about scoring incredible goals: “What a goal Umtiti better than Ronaldo! #unbelievablejeff”
Marseille midfielder Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) reckons it’s a fluke: “What a goal that is. Umtiti could hit a million of them and never do that again. Unbelievable strike…”
Team GB’s Dai Greene (@DaiGreene) is impressed by Bale’s winner: “Naughty Bale. Naughty.”
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace defender Peter Ramage (@peterramage83) is regretting watching his old club: “Well there’s 90mins I’m never going to get back, that Newcastle match wasn’t the hairy chest! Papiss Cisse could and should have had three! #alltodo”
Former Totteham chairman Lord Sugar (@Lord_Sugar) states Bale’s price tag: “Theoretically Spurs can ask £100m as a go away price. Danger is some nutter might pay it. Player can’t go despite protestations he wants CL!”
Finally, ex-Villa midfielder Ian Taylor (@IanTaylor7) keeps it succinct: “@GarethBale11 That is all. #boom #player”
