Derek McInnes revels in Aberdeen’s Scottish League Cup triumph

Derek McInnes was delighted to see Aberdeen lift their first trophy in 19 years on Sunday after beating Caley Thistle on penalties in the Scottish League Cup final.

Aberdeen and Caley Thistle lacked creativity in the showpiece with few chances for either side, and the best opportunity of the final fell to Niall McGinn in the 88th minute at Celtic Park.

However, the Aberdeen striker was the victim of an unfortunate bobble as he went through on goal and McGinn fired his shot over the crossbar before the SPL side went on to win the shootout 4-2 after extra time.

And Aberdeen manager McInness was delighted to finally give the fans something to cheer about after securing long-awaited silverware.

“The supporters have had to endure a lot with very little reward but they’ve been there and they’ve been through thick and thin, so many people deserve the right to enjoy today,” McInnes said.

“We see cups as a real opportunity for success. We’re operating in a league that we can’t win, at the minute, but we can be successful in the cups. I said to the team at the start of the season, if we can win one cup we can win two.

“You can see by the celebrations at the end exactly what it means to people. Whether we won the game by four or five goals and playing sparkling football or won it on penalty kicks, it was all about winning it.”

With his side already in the semi-final of the Scottish cup, McInness and his Dons side have an excellent chance of pulling off an incredible cup double after 14 years without even appearing in a final.
