Liverpool came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday.

Andreas Weimann and Christian Benteke put the visitors 2-0 up before Daniel Sturridge pulled one back for the home side.

And Steven Gerrard slotted away a penalty after half-time to earn a point after Luis Suarez was adjudged to have been brought down by goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

The game inevitably prompted a big response on Twitter – and here are our favourite updates, in chronological order.

Former Villa man Ian Taylor (@IanTaylor7) celebrates Villa’s second: “Beeeeeeeennnnnnnnneeeeeeekkkkkkkeeeeeew!!!! Wooooooaaaaahhhh!!!”

Free agent Jody Morris ‏(@morriskid) singles out the Reds skipper for criticism: “Gerrard nowhere near influencing this game so far…on and off the ball!!!”

Ex-Stoke defender Danny Higginbotham ‏(@Higginbotham05) feels a tactical shake-up is in order: “Rodgers has to change it at half time. Liverpool getting outnumbered in midfield. Liverpool should go to a three at the back.”

England legend Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) tweets his half-time thoughts: “Fabulous first half from Villa, but that exquisite finish from Sturridge sets up the next 45 minutes beautifully.”

Ex-Plymouth boss Peter Reid ‏(@reid6peter) questions the referee’s decision to point to the spot: “Is that another Spanish penalty ?”

Former Southampton man Matt Le Tissier (‏@mattletiss7) wants an update: “Cant see the game did suarez dive?”

And Stan Collymore (‏@StanCollymore) is quick to answer: “Dive from Suarez.”

Before ex-Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane (‏@kdkilbane77) agrees: “A bit late but that’s not a pen. #dive”

Former sprinter and Villa fan Katharine Merry (‏@KatharineMerry) is not happy: “Grrrrrrrrrr………villa again will be hanging on for a point…or some of the first half play please for the win…Liverpool on a roll now”

Ex-Liverpool man David Thompson (@77thomo) chimes in: “This is the deepest Lfc have been all season though coinciding with a dodgy performance scared of the pace of villa!! All change now though!”

Former goalkeeper Shaka Hislop ‏(@ShakaHislop) delivers his post-match thoughts: “Villa get more than they were probably expecting. Liverpool get more than they probably deserve.”

Ex-Reds striker John Aldridge ‏(@Realaldo474) reflects on the performance: “Was it 2 points lost or 1 point gained??? Think we have to keep with the 4-2-3-1 format. The team are better balanced, know what’s required.”

And finally, former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann ‏(@DietmarHamann) wishes Lucas Leiva all the best after the Brazilian picked up a knee problem: “@lucasleiva87 I hope the injury is not too bad and the scans come back ok.All the best Lucas #YNWA”
