The Real Madrid striker pounced on Angel Di Maria’s deflected pass to swivel and fire into the bottom corner from 15 yards after eight minutes.
Argentina will now face either the Netherlands or Costa Rica for a place in the final.
Saturday’s first World Cup quarter-final inevitably prompted plenty of activity on Twitter – and here are our favourite updates, in chronological order as usual.
Former Liverpool man Luis Garcia (@LuchoGarcia14) is not surprised to see Higain net the opener: “Higuain, he was waiting for this kind of games to show what kind of striker he is. Argentina 1 Belgium 0. Golazo de Higuain en el 8′.”
Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) is impressed by the Real Madrid man’s strike: “Wonderfully Instinctive finish from Higuain. Glad he’s finally decided to take part in this World Cup.”
Former striker Michael Owen (@themichaelowen) is, too: “Such a good finish. Didn’t need to look where the goal was and BANG, spanks it right into the corner. He’s a finisher. #Higuain”
Ex-Stoke man Danny Higginbotham (@Higginbotham05) feels Belgium can still get back in the game: “Key to Belgium getting back into this game is getting the balls out wide and crosses into the box. That’s their best chance”
Former England defender Phil Neville (@fizzer18) is not surprised to see Belgium crash out in disappointing fashion: “Not having this Belgium team – never been impressed with them – good individuals average team!”
Dietmar Hamann (@DietmarHamann) is trying to get the conspiracy theorists excited: “The refereeing standard at this WC has been exceptional but that ref today was awful. Borderline suspicious the way he favoured Argentina.”
Joey Barton (@Joey7Barton) tweets his post-match verdict: “Dour game. The Argies find a way to get it done. Belgium great tournament. They’ll be a real threat in France 2016. Hol v Arg semi . I’d love to see a Brazil/Argentina final but Germany will beat Brazil. Argentina fans have been immense…”
And finally, defender Micah Richards (@MicahRichards) is expecting the hosts to go all the way: “Feel so bad for Belgium but well done to Argentina.. Vinnie deme and Zaba all had good games. Brazil to win in for me!”
