Dubai 2015: Halep beats below-par Wozniacki to face Pliskova for title
Simona Halep will face Karolina Pliskova in Saturday's Dubai Duty Free Championships final
Top seed Simona Halep, for the second match in a row, survived a three-set test to reach the final of the prestigious Premier Dubai Duty Free Championships.
She came back from a set down to beat a below-par Caroline Wozniacki, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, and will now play WTA Rising Star Karolina Pliskova, for the title.
Former champion Wozniacki had been battling a virus and a knee injury as well as her opponents all week, and she looked deflated as the match slipped away from her.
“I definitely think it’s taken a toll on me, and I’m still pretty pleased with my week considering everything that has been going on. I was just making so many errors, and I don’t really know where they came from. I think I was just tired: It was like the air of the balloon just kind of went out.”
Halep is now a win away from one of the biggest titles of her career—she won another Premier 5 title a year ago in Doha. After winning Shenzhen earlier this season, she will also return to No3 on the WTA rankings if she wins the title.
Awaiting Halep is No17 seed Pliskova, who beat Garbine Muguruza in a near-three-hour marathon, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.
For Pliskova, it was her third three-set battle in a row in Dubai, but now she will contest the title having never before reached even the quarter-final of a Premier 5 event.
This has been a breakthrough season for the Czech, who has already reached the final in Sydney and the semis in Antwerp to break the top-20 for the first time. She is set to reach No12 unless Sara Errani wins the title in Rio this week.
