Eden Hazard has joked that Chelsea may not have enough money to sign Romelu Lukaku this summer if the playmaker signs a new contract with the Blues.

The Blues have been linked with a transfer swoop to bring the Belgian striker back to the club from Everton in the summer window, although it remains to be seen whether the reports are anything more than newspaper speculation.

Lukaku has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top strikers in recent seasons and has earned plenty of praise for his performances this term under Ronaldo Koeman.

Hazard is expected to open talks with Chelsea about the possibility of extending his contract at the west London club in the coming weeks.

And the Belgian playmaker has jokingly suggested that the Blues may run out of cash if they do offer him a new deal.

Hazard told Belgian outlet Het Nieuwsblad: “If I sign a contract, maybe there won’t be enough money left to get Romelu!

“I’m kidding. Whoever comes in, we’ll be ready for the new season.”
