England

Joe Hart The England No1 had to be alert to a looping cross in the final seconds of the first half. Produced two big saves to spare England’s blushes and deny Joshua King and Mats Møller Dæhli after the restart. 8/10

John Stones A solid debut from the Everton man. A willing runner going forward, although lacked the craft to beat a Norwegian opponent. Still, Stones was unafraid to whip in a delivery. Replaced after 80 minutes with an injury concern. 7

Phil Jones Solid performance from the Manchester United defender. Rarely tested, though. 6

Gary Cahill The Chelsea centre-half was England’s vocal presence at the back. Lucky to escape unpunished after a sloppy back pass was intercepted. 6

Leighton Baines Couldn’t keep an early free-kick attempt on target. Provided a threat with his desire to get forward and help England find a way past Norway. 6

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Didn’t shine quite as bright as Sterling. A quiet night for the Arsenal forward. 5

Jordan Henderson Replacing his Liverpool captain at the heart of Roy Hodgson’s midfield, Henderson was typically energetic and enthusiastic. Still, the 24-year-old looks more effective in a Brendan Rodgers’s side than a Hodgson side. 6

Jack Wilshere The Arsenal midfielder suited the style of England’s front-men, linking well with Sterling and Sturridge in particular. Had a 41st-minute penalty claim turned down after tumbling a tad too easily. A good performance. 7

Raheem Sterling (Man of the match) Bright start from the Liverpool man. The 19-year-old conjured a couple of magic moments to put the Norwegian defence on the back foot. It was such a moment that led to England’s winner as Sterling beat his defender before being brought down to win a penalty. 8

Wayne Rooney The new England captain was the weak link in the first half, losing possession on several occasions. Did cap his first game as permanent skipper with a second-half spot-kick before being replaced. Overall disappointing, though. 6

Daniel Sturridge Looks like a striker in good form. The 25-year-old was always demanding the ball, although perhaps could have delivered a first-time pass to team-mates with a little more urgency. Had two penalty claims waved away in the second half. 7

Substitutes

James Milner Earned his 49th England cap, workman-like cameo role. 5

Fabian Delph Made his England debut but offered little of note. 5

Danny Welbeck The new Arsenal signing had England’s best chance from open play, drawing an excellent save from the Norway goalkeeper.

Calum Chambers A late replacement for Stones. N/A
