Ashley Cole felt England deserved a win after Republic of Ireland held the Three Lions to a draw in Wednesday’s friendly at Wembley.

In what was the first meeting between the two sides since 1995, the visitors took the lead in the 13th minute in north London when Shane Long’s looping header beat Joe Hart.

But Frank Lampard poked home 10 minutes later to net his sixth goal in as many international games and level the score

“I think so [that England should have won],” Cole told ITV1. “There was a great atmosphere, their fans were very good.

“It was always going to be a tough game but I think when we look at it overall, we deserved the win.”

Cole was handed the captain’s armband by manager Roy Hodgson for the game in recognition of the left-back notching up his 100th England cap earlier this year.

And the 32-year-old Chelsea defender was honoured with the reception he received from the England faithful.

“I never expected to get 100 caps and having the reception I did,” Cole continued.

“Once again I’d like to thank the fans for the reception I got – I didn’t expect it. It was a very proud moment for me and one I’ll never forget.

“I wanted to be captain. I don’t really like speaking to the media and the press but it’s a dream come true to be captain. I’ve lived a little boy’s dream today.”
