England v New Zealand: We’re in a strong position, says Jonathan Trott

Jonathan Trott believes England are in a “really strong position” to win the second Test after reducing New Zealand to 158-6 at the end of day four at Headingley.

Graeme Swann took four wickets in the afternoon and evening sessions, with Stuart Broad and Steve Finn each securing a dismissal to leave the Black Caps needing 310 runs to salvage the series.

Earlier in the day, Alastair Cook and Trott put on a second-wicket stand of 134 runs before the England captain was dismissed for 130 and he declared on 287-5 shortly after lunch.

Trott, who posted a score of 75 runs, was satisfied with England’s day-four effort which leaves Cook’s men on the cusp of a second Test win – and series victory.

“We’ve had a great day with bat and ball and we’re in a really strong position,” Trott told BBC Sport.

“If we’d taken the weather into consideration we might have made them follow on. I always get criticism for batting too slowly, so it’s nothing new. It’s a tough game, that’s why it’s called Test cricket, not easy cricket. I was just told to bat how I bat.

“We’re 1-0 up in the series so there’s no need to chase the game, but we want to win every Test we play. You look at time and runs and you want to get it spot on, and I think we’ve done that.”
