Samuel Eto’o became the fourth player to score a hat-trick against Manchester United in the Premier League as the Blues were 3-1 winners at Stamford Bridge.

The Cameroon striker gave the home side a 2-0 half-time lead before completing his hat-trick in the 49th minute, with Javier Hernandez netting a consolation with 12 minutes remaining.

United’s latest disappointment in a troubled season prompted a big response on Twitter – and here is a selection of our favourite posts from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order.

Ex-Norwich City striker Darren Huckerby ‏(@hucks6dh6) makes a not-so-bold claim: “Can see Utd getting proper turned over here! #SuperSuper”

Ashes-winning England captain Michael Vaughan (‏@MichaelVaughan) continues a running theme this winter as Chelsea fan Kevin Pietersen watches his beloved Blues struggle in the opening period: “United are battering Chelsea… #BlameKP”

Everton striker Romelu Lukaku (‏@RomeluLukaku9) is impressed by Eto’o’s opener for his parent club: “Oufff #Quality”

Former Blues defender Michael Duberry (‏@Original_Dubes) reckons the Blues can end United’s challenge with a quick second goal: “A second goal now will kill off Man United as their team is no longer full of those sort of characters that can find a way to win. @chelseafc”

Doncaster Rovers striker David Cotterill ‏(@cotterill_davi) believes United could lose their prized gem if their current woes continue: “Januzaj is some player. United will struggle to keep hold of him. He’s gonna be unbelievable #SuperSunday”

Manchester City defender Micah Richards ‏(@MicahRichards) is a big fan too: “Januzaj is class!”

Ex-United defender Mikael Silvestre (‏@IamMSilvestre) feels the 2-0 score-line is harsh on the visitors: “Has Chelsea over dominated? No but they are in front by two … CHEvMU”

Charlton Athletic’s Marvin Sordell (‏@MarvinSordell) can’t believe he’s watching the same side that won the league title last season: “How many players have United lost from their title-winning side last season?”

England legend Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) reckons United have no option but to spend big this summer: “Tough for any side to lose their best two players, but United are in need of a massive overhaul. So many of their players aren’t good enough.”

Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic ‏(@asmir1) stands up for his compatriot: “Wow, that Vidic challenge has never been a red card.”

Former United striker Louis Saha ‏(@louissaha08) didn’t enjoy the clash: “Not the best afternoon at all. Injuries, Vidic red card, Eto’o hat-trick. #ManchesterUnited in pain. Need to find medicine soon.”

Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien ‏(@MichaelEssien) praises his fellow African: “Well done papa @setoo9….!!”

Former United striker Michael Owen (‏@themichaelowen) reckons Chelsea are hitting their peak now: “Been busy today and only just seen the result. My first reaction is ‘Wow’ for a number of reasons! Chelsea are in the zone.”

Finally, celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan (‏@piersmorgan) can’t resist taunting Robin van Persie: “When Van Pursestrings @Persie_Official quit to ‘win trophies’ at United..did he mean the Championship? #United #Relegation”
