Everton 1 Chelsea 0: Player ratings as Toffees upset Mourinho’s men

Tim Howard Made a string of fine saves with the highlight being a stop from Eto’o in the 35th minute. Assured when dealing with crosses in and around the box. Got out of jail when Barry covered for his mistake in the first half. 7/10

Seamus Coleman Never stopped working. Almost won a penalty for his side midway through the second half when he stole the ball off Hazard who subsequently tracked him back and fouled him on the edge of the box. 7

Phil Jagielka Solid all game with hardly any mistakes. Challenged time and again with crosses but proved a rock at the heart of the Everton defence. 7

Sylvain Distin Lucky to get away with a challenge on Oscar in the second half when the Brazilian was driving forward, which would have resulted in a penalty. 6

Leighton Baines Was sensible enough to be aware when to break forward and when not to, such was the speed with which Chelsea counter-attacked. Won his fair share of tackles and hit the bar late on with a great effort from a free-kick. 7

Leon Osman One of the unsung heroes in Everton’s winning performance. Did a great job sitting in the midfield and picking off any Chelsea attacks, which also allowed Barkley to burst forward. Put in the cross which allowed Jelavic to knock down for the goal. 7

Gareth Barry Played extremely well on his debut, put in a man-of-the-match performance which included putting in a superb challenge to deny Eto’o a certain goal. 8

Kevin Mirallas Was the main focal point of the attack after Jelavic went off. Had a decent effort saved after cutting in from the left hand side in the second half, and held the ball up well when his team were under pressure. 7

Steven Naismith Scored the winner whilst also putting in some quality crosses. Switched flanks with Mirallas to keep the full-backs guessing and was always a threat. 7

Ross Barkley Made several driving runs throughout the match, especially late on which relieved some of the pressure on his team. Was involved in the goal. 6

Nikica Jelavic Got the assist for the goal, but should have scored. Made a poor decision in the second half to go for goal when he should have played in Mirallas. 6

James McCarthy Came on in the 66th minute and helped his team keep possession a bit better and look more solid. 6

Petr Cech Could do nothing about the goal, dealt well with what was thrown at him in terms of shots. 6

Branislav Ivanovic Got forward whenever he could and put in a number of teasing crosses which caused problems. Got booked for handball in the opposition’s box. 6

David Luiz Did well at times to read the play and intercept balls to the front men, distributed the ball well when in possession. Brought down Mirallas late on when it looked as if the Belgian was through on goal. 6

John Terry Could have positioned himself better for Everton’s goal, looked vulnerable whenever Everton counter-attacked in the second half. 6

Ashley Cole Was subbed off in the 69th minute when Chelsea were chasing the lead. Gave in a solid performance as always but looked to be troubled at times by Naismith and Mirallas’ movement. 7

Ramires Should have got himself an assist had Eto’o put the great chance he created for him away. Put an energetic performance in for his side and looked more likely to create a breakthrough for his side as the game wore on. 7

John Obi Mikel Struggled to deal with the counter-attacks his team had to endure in the second half and this was summed up with his booking for a cynical foul on Coleman. 5

Andre Schurrle Had a quiet game. Was subbed early in the second half for Lampard. Poor with his decision-making. 5

Eden Hazard Caused a threat more often in the first half by winning a string of free-kicks, faded in the second half. 6

Juan Mata Looked like a man who had something to prove in the early parts of the match, linked up well and involved in most of Chelsea’s attacks in the first half. Looked short of match fitness at times and was subsequently subbed in the 57th minute. 6

Samuel Eto’o Squandered a number of glaring clear cut chances which he really should have put away, looked short of that spurt of speed which may come once he reaches match fitness. 5

Substitutes

Oscar Should have been given a penalty when his driving run drew a mistimed challenge from Distin. Linked up well in attacks. 6

Frank Lampard His team looked more controlled in possession when he came on and started to dominate a bit more. 7

Fernando Torres Came on when his team needed a goal from him and failed to deliver, hardly influenced the match at all. 5
