Roberto Martinez insisted Everton are relishing an exciting climax to the race for a fourth-place finish after a comprehensive victory over Manchester United.

The Toffees took a first-half lead through Leighton Baines’s penalty after United defender Phil Jones inexplicably handled Romelu Lukaku’s attempt.

We don’t expect Arsenal to drop points easily, we are just looking our ourselves and trying to achieve the maximum number of points we can

Everton, who trailed Arsenal by four points after the Gunners’s 3-0 victory at Hull, doubled their lead through Kevin Miralles before half-time.

Wayne Rooney wasted United’s best chance with four minutes remaining at Goodison Park as David Moyes endured an uncomfortable return to his former club.

“What he [Moyes] achieved at Everton will never be forgotten,” Martinez told BBC Sport.

“The next three games are exciting and we will try and get as many points as possible.

“We don’t expect Arsenal to drop points easily, we are just looking our ourselves and trying to achieve the maximum number of points we can.”

Everton’s 2-0 victory secured wins against United home and away this season, and Martinez was pleased to comfortably beat the defending champions.

“It was more than pleasing. It was an outstanding result and the first time we have done the double over Manchester United since 1969. I couldn’t be prouder,” Martinez added.

“We knew we were facing a very good side. Their away record is excellent but we were focused and controlled the game and were electrifying on the counter-attack.

“We worked hard to keep a clean sheet, that is difficult to do when you take a two-goal lead, especially against Manchester United. It speaks volumes of the togetherness and focus of this team.”
