Everton 3 Liverpool 3: Romelu Lukaku honoured by ‘best experience’
Everton 3 Liverpool 3: Romelu Lukaku puts disappointment of conceding equaliser to one side and reflects on thrilling game
Romelu Lukaku put the disappointment of Everton conceding a last-minute equaliser to one side and chose to reflect on a thrilling Merseyside derby against Liverpool.
An 89th-minute Daniel Sturridge header earned the Reds a dramatic draw in a pulsating game after Lukaku’s double had put the Toffees 3-2 ahead.
Philippe Coutinho put Liverpool 1-0 up early in the first half but Everton drew level through Kevin Mirallas shortly after.
Luis Suarez’s low free-kick then restored Liverpool’s advantage, before Lukaku’s second-half double made it 3-2 with eight minutes to go.
But substitute Sturridge headed home one minute from time to earn the Reds a point and keep them in second place in the table.
“It was great – the best experience I’ve ever had in club football,” Lukaku told BT Sport.
“It’s a great honour to be involved and to score two goals was great. But it’s a pity we didn’t win. Hopefully next time we will.
“The manager said before the game that last week we had a lot of chances but we had to stay positive and keep on working. That’s what we did today. We did our best and to score to goals and help us get back in the game was great.”
Lukaku, who is on loan at Goodison Park from Chelsea, added: “I think you can see I’m enjoying myself on the pitch.
“I’m just doing my best and try to help my team-mates. Week after week I just try to improve to get the best out of my game and I think it’s going well right now.”
