Roberto Martinez was pleased with Everton’s response after half-time as the Toffees sealed victory over Swansea City.

Leighton Baines gave the Merseysiders the lead at Goodison Park from the penalty spot in the 20th minute after Chico Flores brought down Ross Barkley.

Today was a big game for both sides and we needed those three points

Swansea drew level thanks to Wilfried Bony’s equaliser in the 33rd minute, before Romelu Lukaku restored Everton’s lead shortly after half-time

Ross Barkley’s header then made it 3-1 in the 58th minute before Ashley Williams’s late consolation goal.

The win left Everton fifth in the Premier League table, and Martinez was pleased with his side’s response after an “open” first half.

“In the first 45 we were too open,” said Martinez. “We changed that mentality after the break, won the ball in good positions and used possession well.

“In the second half, Tim Howard was really bright on a couple of occasions and he didn’t deserve to concede twice.

“You’re not going to be able to win fantastically well in every game but you always need to find the margins to win matches.

“I’m very pleased for many reasons, particularly because of the performances from some of our younger players.

“I wish Swansea well and the best of the luck but today was a big game for both sides and we needed those three points. Without being at our best, we got an important win – our eighth home win in a row.”
